Teahouse Trekking

Teahouse Trekking

If you have not trekked in the himalayas you may not be familer with "Teahouse Trekking". This is probably the most popular style of trekking and simlpy involoves going frin teahouse to teahouse. Teahouse are essentially small hotels found in local village that offer both a place to sleep as well as home cooked meals. On route with sufficient number of tea houses you do not need to worry about bringing a tent or carrying your own food. the actual quality of the teahouse aries quite a bit depending on the amount of foot traffic in the region, number of foreigners and competition. Teahoise in the everest and annpurna region are exceptionally nice and many boast of western style flush toilets, hot showers, a selection of neverages including beer and a wide range of menu items. teahouse along less popular trekking routes are usually more rudimentary and one might except to sleep in a common rooms around a toasty stove after enjoying meal of dhal bath (rice & lentils)

Tea house are great & good experience

if you are trekking the everest and annaourna region the tea houses are almost like small hotels but with a much more homestay feeling. most have a restaurant area where you can meet other trekkers and enjoy a little warmth from the stove while you eat or enhoy a beer in the evening before sleeping.

Teahouse food is all the same

despite the exensive menus and offering we always get the feeling the food is all the same. its just arranged differently. The traditional favourite is dhal bath and its always all you can eat so if your supper hungry its a good option for you to have it. if you like differnt food likle korean food , a few places on everest treks started selling some kimchi which is pretty decent.

Teahouse showers and electricity

Most the tea houses in the everest and annapurna region have cold showers available and few even have a hot water showers for extra cost of service cost around $4 per person. Electricity is usually available the moin dining area and is charged a an hourly rate of $1- $2.

Teahouse sleeping arrangements

most rooms are shared with two small cots that have mattress, pillow and sheets. Blankets are also available upon request but might be not enought clean as you expected. The wall are pretty thin so noise carries and we reccommend to bring some earplugs to ger a good night sleep for places. You might also want to bring your own pillow case to put over the pillow just incase.

If you are outiside of the main trekking areas like everest, annpurna, Langtang, you will find that the teahouse accommodation is much more basic. in hese places the menu is set and everyone might eat abd sleep togather in the same common area. of you do not like being cramped you can always bring your own tent and then eat and enjoy common time with everyone alse in the tea houses. these tea houses are also quite smokey as the main fuel used for cooking is Yak duing which born for a long time. No matter the quality of the tea houses the friendly spirit of the local nepaleses is always present and they will do their best to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Trekking i the regions with t he more baisc teahouses is an experience not to be missed and show you the other side of Nepal that very few tourist get to see.
